A 19th Century French or English Louis XIII revival frame. It has composition ornament at the corners, one is complete, one almost complete, and the other two have some losses The ornament running round the frame is made from gesso/plaster and is in very good condition. I think the corners look a little 'Victorian' while the running ornament looks of much better quality. The inner sight edge has incised detail in the gesso. The frame appears to have been gilded twice in its life with two layers of gilding, quite common for antique frames. Along one side there is some areas of gesso loss to the side hollow, there is also some typical gesso loss around the sides. The corners are joined with mortise and tenon type joints.
