A 17th Century carved wood Louis XIII frame.
This is an English Louis XIII bunched leaf hand carved frame (approx made between 1660 to 1710), it is an English version of French Louis XIII frames. Sadly the frame has been re-gilded in metal leaf, in my opinion not very well at all. Personally I think it would be better to completely remove the re-gilding, and either use it in plain wood to see the carving in its natural state, or to re-gild it to a high standard with gold leaf. The condition is of course aged and distressed to reflect the considerable age. There are a few losses to the boldly carved ornament which consists of leaves and acorns. The inner slip is a new addition and in poor condition with several splits and needs to be removed or replaced. A backing support frame or sub-frame has been added at a later date, either to provide support for the old mitre spline joints or to allow the accommodation of painting and glazing.
