A
very good quality French made 19th Century composition Barbizon or
Salon gallery frame. This is the classic and real Barbizon style of
frame. The style is a 19th Century revival of earlier Louis XIII frame patterns. The compo ornament is finely cast with deeply sculptured and prominent leaf and flower ornament on a
stippled ground. The inner and outer ornament is also deep and crisp.
Original water gilded finish, much of which would have originally
been highly burnished (such as the sides, middle hollow, and high
points of the ornament) Various missing pieces of ornament, cracks in the compo, and all
corners are sadly damaged. If the frame is to be repaired the corners will need to be fixed by taking a mould from another frame, or by modelling one corner free-hand to take a mould from, nevertheless the frame would make a fabulous mirror as it is, or once restored would be an excellent original period frame for a 19th Century painting.
